Evaluating Unified Communications

What, exactly, is unified communications? IP telephony vendors define it in terms of VoIP, while other manufacturers focus on collaboration with additional comminucation layers, such as instant messaging and shared desktops. However, making real-time communications work reliably on a large scale is a slightly bigger challenge than most people are aware of.

With an increasingly mobile workforce, and de-centralised businesses, Unified Communications facilitates a more accessable layer to the different communications options avaialble to the end user. The Unified communications (UC) Lab will investigate all of these areas including unified messaging, collaboration, SIP, interaction systems; real-time and near real-time communications; and transactional applications. The lab will endeavour to address some of the key questions affecting the attendee:

  • What are the top UC applications in terms of actual implementation
  • What UC investments should enterprises consider making
  • Who do you need to work with to make this happen
