For those of you who weren't able to visit our booth at Interop Vegas this year, I wanted to share with you a decision we made prior to the show. In an effort to live our brand, we decided not to print and distribute the standard set of collateral at the show (thus saving paper, fuel, etc). Instead, we created a small card that included a pointer to our new "Download Zone" on the Verdiem website where we're now housing many of our materials.

Just finished up a presentation on SOA at this year’s InterOp 2008 Conference in Las Vegas, NV. Great conference - I highly recommend it next year for those that have not gone in the past. Given the uncertain state of the economy, we didn’t know what to expect at Interop this spring. The show appears healthy. There is a lot of energy in the crowds, and attendees appear to be paying rapt attention to what is going on at the show. But this year's Interop marks the first time I've ever seen an intelligent patch panel: one that drives the visibility into your network another layer deeper than the visibility that might normally end with your routers and switches. The offering -- a Best of Interop finalist -- comes from Panduit, and about the only thing I can imagine coming next might be intelligent RJ45 jacks. Actually, after I finished my video interview with Panduit's Mike Pula (below) and sarcastically mentioned that idea, he didn't laugh and said the idea actually solves a problem.

Well, we’re off to a great start, I thought. It was 9:40 am, and I hadn’t hooked up with my 9:30 meeting – the first of the first day of this massive conference for networking (in every sense of the word). It didn't bode well. However, that time lapse did give me a chance to briefly thumb through a new book by this morning’s keynote speaker, C.K. Prahalad, titled “The New Age of Innovation: Driving Co-Created Value Through Global Networks.”

So this morning I am having some coffee in theHotel and a person sitting next to me is telling is friends sitting with him that he had his laptop stolen last night while he was drinking at the bar. I looked over and asked him if he had his entire hard disk encrypted? He said no his company goes not offer that as of yet to its employees, I gave him my card and told him to have his CIO call me and I would help out. Then that got me to think, with everything that Interop shows there were only two vendors who offer this product and they are in the last row, in a far back corner of Interop.

The worst news from Interop is that my fat old body just can't handle the things I did easily 15 years ago when I made a living teaching 5-day NetWare administration seminars. My Disaster Recovery Cookbook workshop went well, with 80 of my now-closest friends spending the day listening to me pontificate on the relative merits of Cemaphore Systems' MailShadow over Double-Take or WANsync. I, however, was a wreck at the end of the day. Even more disappointing, no one took me up on my offer of free craps lessons. The show seems to be recovering from a few years of dot-com bubble hangover, with bigger crowds of both vendors and attendees than I remember from the last two years.

So the show is open, the booths are built, and the crowds have descended on the exhibitors. My first impression: Wow. If trade show attendance is any indication of an industry's heath, then data networking is heading toward a boom. I haven't seen a computer-industry trade show floor look this good in at least six years. People are talking purchases, exhibitors are showing lots of new products, and everyone seems to be in a good mood (as opposed to the the grim, depressed feeling that ruled for a while).
